Olá! Ready for today’s task?
Learn 3 new words in Portuguese
I say 3 words but you can learn as many new words in Portuguese as you like/are able to. If you don’t have a list you’re currently working on, you can use a random word generator such as this one:
I really like this one as it offers a choice of different dictionaries such as a complete dictionary and a dictionary for children, among other choices.
It’s good practice to try and learn the words in context. And one way to practice this is to try to make sentences right away, no matter what level you’re at.
And don’t worry if you’re just starting and don’t know a lot of vocabulary. Write them in your own native language and use a translator so you can see what it should look like in Portuguese.
Now, of course, online translators aren’t always 100% reliable, and also some of them will translate into Brazillian Portuguese (like google translate). So, to avoid that, I recommend using DeepL.
Regarding the sentences, try to make them according to your level of proficiency or try to fit them into the most recent thing you have learnt. For instance, that could be a new tense or new sentence structure you have recently learned.
Let me show you what that could look like.
(The examples below are made from words generated by the complete dictionary.)
The words I got were:
rezar (to pray) / claustrofobia (claustrophobia) / maravilha (wonder/marvel)
Beginners
- Eu rezo todos os dias. (I pray every day.)
- Não tenho claustrofobia. (I don’t have claustrophobia.)
- Isto é uma maravilha! (This is a wonder/marvel!)
Intermediate
- Eu costumava rezar todos os dias, mas agora já não. (I used to pray everyday, but now I no longer do)
- Ele contou-me que dantes tinha claustrofobia. (he told me that he used to have claustrofobia)
- A minha amiga disse-me que o dia tinha sido uma maravilha. (my friend said to me that the day had been a wonder)
Advanced
- Eles querem que eu reze todos os dias. (they want that I pray every day /they want me to pray every day)
- Se ele não tivesse claustrofobia, isto seria muito mais fácil. (If he didn’t have claustrophobia, this would be so much easier)
- Se o filme for uma maravilha então diz-me. (If the film is a wonder then tell me)
If you don’t want to write sentences you could maybe improvise a story with the words you get, similar to what I did in this video lesson:
Let me know how it goes and don’t forget to record your progress on your printable tracking sheet. Até amanhã!
