Complete Guide to Learning European Portuguese Naturally
1. What is European Portuguese?
European Portuguese is the variety that we speak here in Portugal. It differs from Brazilian Portuguese in pronunciation, rhythm, and vocabulary. Many learners struggle with these differences because most resources online focus on Brazilian Portuguese. Check out my detailed breakdown of the language!
This site specialises in European Portuguese for English speakers, helping you learn naturally through listening, stories, and real-life context.
- Learn European Portuguese pronunciation from the start
- Understand common differences between European and Brazilian Portuguese
- Gain confidence in everyday conversation
2. How to Start Learning (Step-by-Step Path)
Learning a language is easier when you follow a clear path. Here’s how I structure it:
Step 0 – Start from Zero (A0)
If you’ve found that even A1 resources seem overwhelming or incomprehensible, I’ve created a special earlier learning path to help you overcome this hurdle.
Step 1 – Listening First:
Immerse yourself in stories, conversations, and real-life language. Your brain begins absorbing patterns naturally. Don’t worry about understanding everything at first and getting stuck on specific words – if you do, pause the video, write it down on a pad (or what you think the word is) and continue the video.
Step 2 – Stories & Repetition:
Follow my characters and the scenarios across lessons. Repetition helps retention and comprehension.
Step 3 – Speaking Naturally:
Practice with guided exercises, role-plays, and conversation prompts to start speaking early.
Step 4 – Grammar Support:
Grammar is included, but it’s used to clarify meaning, not as the starting point. You’ll learn ser vs estar, verb conjugations, and common patterns when they matter.
Step 5 – Practice & Feedback:
Use exercises, quizzes, and audio resources to reinforce your learning.
Each step links to the lessons and resources you need to progress.
3. Beginner Lessons (A1/A2)
If you are a beginner:
- A1: Understand and use basic phrases, ask and answer simple questions
- A2: Handle simple tasks in familiar situations, communicate in routine contexts
I provide structured A1/A2 lessons designed for English speakers learning European Portuguese.
4. Listening & Pronunciation Practice
Listening is the fastest way to develop comprehension and speaking skills! Use this resource to the max!
- Train your ear for European Portuguese vowel sounds
- Hear real-life dialogue and everyday vocabulary (radio and TV are really helpful here)
