Greet Someone in Portuguese

Today your goal is to greet someone in Portuguese, depending on the time of day.

In Portugal, it’s very common to say both “hello” and “good morning” (or afternoon or evening) in the same greeting. The task today is divided into proficiency levels, so choose the one that is adequate for you!

Beginners:

olá, bom dia! (hello, good morning)

olá, boa tarde! (hello, good afternoon)

olá, boa noite! (hello, good evening)

Intermediates:

After greeting, initiate small talk in Portuguese.

Examples:

Como está hoje? (How are you today?)

Está um lindo dia hoje! (It’s a lovely day today)

Já viu esta chuva? (Have you seen this rain? )

Advanced:

After the greeting and initial small talk, go further with the small talk. Comment on a current affair with a native just as you would in your native language.

Examples:

Viu as notícias sobre _____ ontem? (did you see the news yesterday about____?)

Viu o jogo de ontem à noite? (Did you watch last night’s game/match?)

Next, have a look at some ideas for small talk in Portuguese. Let me know how you get on. Até amanhã!
