7 Alternative ways to say Thank You in Portuguese

Have you ever wondered if there are other ways to say thank you in Portuguese? You’ve reached the right lesson! I will cover 7 alternative ways to say Thank you in Portuguese and help you sound more like a native speaker.

Another way to express gratitude in Portuguese is by using the íssimo and íssima endings. These endings intensify adjectives. For example, obrigadíssimo means ‘thank you so much’ or ‘thank you extremely much.’

obrigadíssimo

obrigadíssima

We can also intensify the word muito (very) by adding íssimo. It’s almost as if you’re saying ‘intensely thank you.’

Muitíssimo obrigado

Muitíssimo obrigada

Another way to intensify the meaning is by using the Portuguese augmentative ão, adding it to the end of the word. Augmentatives make the word bigger. This version of ‘thank you’ is used to convey deep appreciation and gratitude. It can be viewed as very informal as well. You may hear this one when someone is very appreciative and thankful for something, they may even be at a loss for words.

obrigadão

The use of diminutives is widespread in Portuguese, and ‘thank you’ is no exception. I’m sure you’ve heard or come across ‘obrigadinho’ before. If you’re familiar with Portuguese diminutives, you’ll know that they’re supposed to make the thing we’re talking about into a smaller version of it.

But this is not the exclusive use of them. In a contradicting way, adding inho or inha to the end of a word can sometimes also intensify the meaning or make something sound friendlier. This is the case with obrigadinho and obrigadinha. The ending makes the ‘thank you’ sound more friendly and intensifies the meaning as well.

obrigadinho

obrigadinha

We can use the word agradecido or agradecida which means thankful. and just like with obrigado, it will agree with the gender of the person saying it.

agradecido (a man is saying he’s thankful)

agradecida (a woman is saying she’s thankful)

There is also the word grato or grata, which simply means grateful. And just like obrigado and agradecido it will follow the gender of the person saying it.

grato (a man is saying he’s grateful)

grata (a woman is saying she’s grateful)

By using the verb agradecer (to thank) we can thank someone by conjugating it.

agradeço (I thank)

agradeces (you thank)

agradece (you – formal/ he/she thanks)

agradecemos (we thank)

agradecem (you – plural/they thank)
