Legumes or Vegetais?
So, what do we call vegetables? In everyday food conversation, we call them legumes. But don’t think that means the same thing as legumes in English, those we call leguminosas.
The word vegetais is also used, but it’s all vegetables, greens, legumes and often includes fruits as well.
We also have the words “verduras” and “hortaliças”. Verduras come from the word “verde” (green) and refer to green leafy vegetables like lettuce and cabbage.
Hortaliças refers to vegetables grown in a vegetable garden (horta), and the word is used more in a rural context.
