Not to mention the fact that it’s very easy to simply not speak Portuguese in Portugal. These include goals such as: “I’ll be fluent in x months”
This happens, more often than not, because many Portuguese people will speak a second language like English. Especially if you move to the coast or popular areas.
The same goes for vague goals such as: “I’ll do this intensive x week course and then I’ll be set”.
Demotivation from Unrealistic Goals
Setting unattainable language learning goals can demoralize even the most dedicated learners. Unrealistic expectations create unnecessary pressure, and failing to meet these expectations may lead to feelings of inadequacy. I’ve seen this happen, it’s usually when students start saying things like:
“I don’t think I’ll need to use that” (and I’m talking about basic functional words – not some obscure vocabulary about dinosaurs);
“I don’t need to learn verbs”;
“I don’t want to know the connecting words”; etc
“I’m taking a break from Portuguese because x,y,z” (the longer you leave it – the longer it will take)
Recognizing that language acquisition is a gradual process, and perfection is not the benchmark for success is essential. Rather than thinking about fluency, think about proficiency. Rather than setting a goal of learning Portuguese in X months strive to be present in the language a little bit every day. Break the goals down into manageable goals.
