Do you ever get stuck with the language when you’re at the supermarket in Portugal? Would you like to do your shopping in Portuguese? Then you’re on the right page! Here, you’ll learn all the relevant vocabulary you’ll need at the supermercado, so let’s jump in.
Preparing for the Supermarket
Before you go to the supermercado, let’s get organized (organizemo-nos). We need (precisamos de):
- lista de compras e caneta (shopping list and pen);
- saco de compras (shopping bag);
- moeda ou ficha (coin or token – for trolley);
- cartão cliente (rewards card);
- dinheiro ou cartão multibanco (money or debit card);
EXERCISE SUGGESTION: Try to make your shopping list in Portuguese. If you’re unfamiliar with the vocabulary, put the English meaning beside it in brackets. Make sure you use a Portuguese dictionary, otherwise you may end up with Brazilian vocabulary. This can be a bit of a problem as many times, the names are different. Because of this, you may not be understood when you start asking where those things are and ultimately have to revert to English, thus defeating this exercise’s purpose.
