No Portuguese Advent celebration is complete without Christmas trees in Portugal. Our tradition includes setting up the Árvore de Natal (Christmas tree) on the 8th of December, the Day of the Immaculate Conception, a public holiday. Alternatively, some opt for the 1st of December, coinciding with the Day of the Restoration of Independence. Whether a pinheiro (pine tree) or an artificial one, the tree becomes a canvas for colourful balls, ribbons, and cherished ornaments, creating a festive ambience. According to Advent religious practice, the tree should be assembled on the first Sunday of Advent, while the nativity scene takes centre stage on the third Sunday.
The 1st Christmas Tree in Portugal
Even though the Christmas tree wasn’t always a tradition in Portugal, nowadays it’s an element that cannot be overlooked during the festive season. Thanks to Fernando II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and King Consort to Queen D. Maria II, who brought the idea from his childhood Christmases in Germany. Around 1844, Fernando I set up the first Christmas tree in Portugal at the Royal Palácio de Necessidades in Lisbon. He also designed the country’s first Christmas greeting cards in the country.

There is a range of options on the market, and most people will opt for an artificial tree. But you are able to order natural Christmas trees here in Portugal. Choosing the perfect Christmas tree is an art, and understanding the differences between the available options adds an exciting dimension to the festive preparations.
Picking the Right Christmas Tree 🌲
The decision between the Nordmann, noble fir, and common spruce is a personal one. The Nordmann, with its enduring needles, is a crowd-pleaser, while the noble fir exudes elegance and a robust aroma, albeit requiring a bit more TLC. If you’re drawn to the freshness of the forest, the common spruce is an excellent choice, but remember to set it up later to preserve its charm through the holidays.
