What are the impersonal expressions in Portuguese? If you’re learning the language and have progressed beyond the beginner stages, you’ve no doubt come across this term already. These are the expressions used with some of the subjunctive tenses and the personal infinitive tenses. They are easy to spot because they start off the sentence with “ser” followed by an adjective, and, in the case of the subjunctive, there will be “que” after the adjective. So let’s find out more about what all that means.
Lesson
How impersonal expressions are made
As I mentioned in the intro, these expressions start with “ser” followed by an adjective and then, in the case of the subjunctive tenses, followed by “que” (that). To compare this with English, it’s when we start sentences with “it’s/it is” followed by a description, and then “that” (for example: it’s good that we go now).

Imperfeito do Conjuntivo with Impersonal Expressions
This tense is the one we use to express a future that was hypothetical or wished for in the past that didn’t come to pass – an “it would have been” type of sentence. It’s also used to express a hypothetical future but, expressing it in the past tense – an “it would be” type of sentence. When used with impersonal expressions specifically, “ser” is in the past tense. Next are some examples of this use. For the pronunciation watch this video demonstration. The translations are more on the literal side and may sound a little awkward at times in English.
