Bread is a staple of everyday life in Portugal, and pão caseiro (homemade bread) — made with just a few ingredients and a lot of care — is a tradition passed down through generations. In many villages, communal ovens are still used, where neighbours gather to bake bread on set days — a ritual of community and connection. Each region has its own variation: from the crusty, dense loaves of the Alentejo, to the slightly sweet, rustic corn breads of the north. Baking bread at home is more than a recipe — it’s a way of connecting to the land, family, and Portugal’s shared cultural memory.

👩🍳 Modo de preparação / Method
- Passo 1 – Numa taça grande, junte a farinha, o açúcar, o sal e o fermento. (Step 1: In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Pour in the warm water and stir until you get a sticky, wet dough.
(Step 2: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover it with a clean tea towel and leave it to rise for about 2 hours, or until doubled in size.)
- Passo 3 – Pré-aqueça o forno a 230 ºC. (Step 3: Preheat your oven to 230°C.)
(Step 4: Line a cast-iron pot (or other oven-safe dish) with baking paper and place the dough inside. Let it rest for another 30 minutes so it can rise a bit more.)
(Step 5: Cover the pot and bake for 30 minutes. Then uncover and bake for a further 15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the bread is cooked through to your liking.)
