Pronouns are always a little confusing to learn in Portuguese if you’re a native English speaker. This is because Portuguese has many more than English. In this lesson, we’re looking at Prepositional Personal Pronouns in Portuguese. As this title suggests, these pronouns will change in function of what preposition is used. In Portuguese, they are often referred to as Pronomes Oblíquos Tónicos.
How do they change?
They change according to what preposition is used. This means that if we use the preposition “with”, then the pronoun will be different to if we use the preposition “for”. Let’s look at some examples:
As you can see, when I use “para” (for), the pronoun is mim but when I use “com” (with) the pronoun changes to comigo.
Wich Prepositions change the Pronouns?
Mainly: com, de, em and a
We already saw how they change with the preposition “a” when we looked at the indirect object pronouns in this lesson. I’ve not included them in this lesson because they are clitics (those small hyphenated particles you see like me/te/lhe). Here is a downloadable table of what they are. Below are how they change with other prepositions.
With the Preposition “com”
The following table will show you what they are when we use the preposition “com“. Examples are after the table.
Examples
With the Preposition “de”
The following table will show you what they are when we use the preposition “de“. Examples are after the table.

With the Preposition “em”
The following table will show you what they are when we use the preposition “em“. Examples are after the table.

With all the other prepositions, the form will be the ones in the table below. Following are several examples.
