7 alternative ways to say “thank you” in European Portuguese

Have you ever wondered if there is a different way to say thank you in Portuguese? You’ve reached the right lesson! I will cover 7 different ways to do so and help you sound more like a native speaker.

1- “obrigadíssimo” or “obrigadíssima”

The “íssimo” and “íssima” endings are one way we intensify adjectives in Portuguese, in this case, “obrigadíssimo” means “Thank you SO much” or “thank you extremely much”.

2- “Muitíssimo obrigado” or “muitíssmo obrigada”

We can also intensify the word “very” instead of “Obrigado” by adding “íssimo” to muito: “Muitíssimo obrigado” or “muitíssmo obrigada” is almost like you’re saying “intensely thank you”.

3- “obrigadão”

Another way to intensify the meaning is to use the Portuguese augmentative “ão” adding it to the end of the word: “obrigadão

This version is considered informal (and gender-neutral). I would say it’s almost on the verge of being slang actually. It’s certainly used a lot among good friends.

4- “Obrigadinho” and “obrigadinha”

The use of diminutives is widespread in Portuguese and “thank you” is no exception. I’m sure you’ve heard of or come across: “Obrigadinho and obrigadinha” before.

If you’re familiar with Portuguese diminutives you know that they are supposed to make the thing we’re talking about into a smaller version of it. But this is not their exclusive use of them. In a contradicting way, adding “inho” or “inha” to the end of a word can sometimes ALSO intensify it and/or make something sound more friendly. That is the case here with “obrigadinho” and “obrigadinha“.

Important note: Tone is very important with this one, otherwise it may come across as sarcastic.

5- “agradecido” or “agradecida”

We can say “agradecido” or “agradecida” which means “thankful”.

Estou muito agradecida” or “estou muito agradecido” (I’m very thankful).

6- “grato” or “grata”

We can also use the word “grato” or “grata” which means “grateful”

sou muito grata” or “sou muito grato” (I am very grateful”).

7- “agradeço”

Using the verb “agradecer” (to thank) by conjugating it. “agradeço imenso” meaning “I immensely thank”
