The tradition dates back to 1958 and was organized by the Lisbon City Municipal Council (and still is). This tradition also known as “Os casamentos de Santo António” was a way to support young couples who couldn’t afford a proper wedding ceremony.

Each year, a group of young brides, usually from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, are selected to participate in the Noivas de Santo António. These brides receive a complete wedding package, including a stunning wedding dress, accessories, and professional hair and makeup services. The grooms are also provided with appropriate attire for the occasion.

The brides, often accompanied by their grooms, parade through the streets of Lisbon, creating a spectacle of beauty and joy. This procession is a symbolic representation of the joy of marriage and the hope for a prosperous future together.

The Noivas de Santo António parade takes place in the historic Alfama district of Lisbon, adding to the already vibrant atmosphere of the Saint Anthony festivities. The brides, in their exquisite wedding dresses, walk hand in hand with their grooms, while the streets are filled with locals and visitors who come to witness this heartwarming spectacle.

The Noivas de Santo António event is not just about the parade; it also includes various celebratory activities. After the procession, a collective wedding ceremony occurs, where the couples exchange their vows and rings. The ceremony symbolizes the commitment and union of the couples, surrounded by the love and support of their community.

The celebrations continue with music, dancing, and feasting, as everyone gathers to share in the excitement of the newlyweds. Traditional Portuguese food, including the iconic grilled sardines, is often part of the festivities.

The Noivas de Santo António is a heartwarming and inclusive tradition that brings joy and hope to couples and the community as a whole. Through this event, Lisbon embraces the spirit of Saint Anthony’s Day, celebrating love, unity, and the power of community support. The tradition is a reminder that love knows no boundaries. Happiness can be found in the simplest of moments, surrounded by loved ones.
