Grandparents’ Day in Portugal

In Portugal, we celebrate Grandparents’ Day in Portugal on the 26th of July. Although O Dia dos Avós is not an official holiday, this date is special. It’s a time to show love and appreciation to our grandparents. And if you’re the grandparent then this is your day!

Grandparents’ Day has deep roots. Ana Elisa Couto, known as Dona Aninhas, was the main advocate for this date. Born in Penafiel, she was the grandmother of six. For almost 20 years, she fought for this celebration to be recognized.

Finally, in 2003, the Republic’s Assembly instituted the date, choosing the 26th of July as it’s the day of Saint Anne and Saint Joachim, the grandparents of Jesus Christ.

Grandparents hold a unique place in people’s hearts. I’m sad to share I never experienced that, as mine lived abroad or had passed before I was born. I hear their wise eyes, warm hugs, and timeless stories connect us to the past.

So on Grandparents’ Day in Portugal, we take a moment to honour these incredible individuals who spread their magical love and wisdom. It doesn’t matter if you call them “Vovó,” “Vovô,” or “Avô/Avó”; their love knows no language barriers.

Are you’re Grandparents Portuguese? Wondering how to make this day even more special? Here are some ideas! First, grab your crafting supplies and unleash your creativity. How about making a personalized card using your newly acquired Portuguese skills? Your grandparents will be delighted to receive a heartfelt message in a language they might not expect!

But wait, there’s more! Gather your family and prepare some culinary delights from your grandparents’ homeland. Language and culture go hand in hand, so what better way to celebrate than through the stomach? Try making a delicious pastel de nata, arroz doce, or any other delicacy that connects them to their Portuguese roots. Check out some recipes here.

Let’s face it, grandparents are like walking history books. They’ve seen it all, from floppy disks to smartphones! Grandparents’ Day is the perfect opportunity to relax and immerse in fascinating stories from the past. You’ll be impressed with the tales they have to tell – stories of triumphs, adventures, and maybe even a bit of mischief from their rebellious youth.

Language learners, if you have Portuguese Avós this is your chance to practice your listening skills! Engage in heartfelt conversations with your grandparents in their native language. Believe me, they’ll appreciate the effort, and you might even learn some old-fashioned expressions to impress your friends!

As we bid farewell to this heartwarming celebration, let’s remember that Grandparents’ Day is not just about one day of the year. It’s about embracing the spirit of family, love, and intergenerational connection all year round. Whether sharing stories, savouring cultural delights, or exchanging heartfelt words in a new language, remember that the bond with your grandparents is truly one-of-a-kind.

So, dear Portuguese learners, take this opportunity to celebrate the love, wisdom, and timeless connection that comes from having grandparents in your life. Enjoy the joy of Grandparents’ Day, and who knows, maybe this is the start of a beautiful language-learning journey together with your beloved “avós.” Happy Grandparents’ Day, and may your hearts always be filled with warmth and love!
