Nuno Álvares Pereira

Nuno Álvares Pereira, also known as the Holy Constable or formerly by São Nuno de Santa Maria, was a distinguished 14th-century Portuguese nobleman and general. He was born on June 24, 1360, in Paço do Bonjardim this man’s legacy is intricately woven into the fabric of Portugal’s history. In particular during the pivotal crisis of 1383-1385 when the nation fiercely defended its independence from Castile in the Battle of Aljubarrota.


In addition to his military prowess, Nuno Álvares Pereira held significant titles, including the 2nd Constable of Portugal, 38th Chief Steward of the Kingdom, 7th Count of Barcelos, 3rd Count of Ourém, and 2nd Count of Arraiolos. Despite commanding forces outnumbered by the enemy, he emerged victorious in every battle, earning him the esteemed position of the patron saint of the Portuguese infantry.


His exemplary leadership, characterized by personal example and countless military virtues, left an indelible mark on Portugal’s history. Renowned poet Luís de Camões paid tribute to the Constable 14 times in “Os Lusíadas,” describing him as “fierce Nuno” and celebrating his profound service to the King and the Kingdom.

Monuments and Statues

Several sculptures immortalize Nuno Álvares Pereira’s legacy, with notable installations in Lisbon’s Praça do Comércio, Ourém Castle, and a majestic equestrian statue outside the Batalha Monastery. A statue in his birthplace, Cernache de Bonjardim, further commemorates his significant role.

The day of his birth, June 24, 1360, is celebrated as a public holiday in the municipality of Sertã, emphasizing the profound impact of this revered figure. Initially buried in the Carmo Convent in Lisbon, Nuno Álvares Pereira’s remains found their final resting place in the Church of Santo Condestável in Lisbon on August 14, 1951, coinciding with the commemoration of the 566th anniversary of Portugal’s triumph in the Battle of Aljubarrota. The reason for the move was the partial destruction of the convent by the 1755 earthquake.


Beyond his military legacy, Nuno Álvares Pereira is the patron saint of the National Scout Corps – Portuguese Catholic Scouting and the Fraternity of Nuno Álvares – Association of Adult Scouts. Canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on April 26, 2009, his feast day is celebrated on November 6, honouring the enduring significance of this revered historical figure in Portugal’s cultural and religious heritage.
