Happy Saint Brigid’s Day! 🌼 On this special day, in Ireland, we celebrate the life and legacy of St. Brigid, one of Ireland’s patron saints. Her contributions to Irish Christianity, including the founding of the important monastic community at Kildare, are truly remarkable.

You may be wondering what this has to do with Portugal or Portuguese, and the answer is nothing. But as some of you may know, I am half Irish, and I thought I’d share some Irish-ness today. 🇮🇪

The Legend ☘️

Little is known about Brigid’s life, except through legend, myth, and folklore. According to these tales, she was born in the province of Leinster to a noble father and an enslaved mother. Both were sold to a Druid, whom Brigid later converted to Christianity. Upon gaining freedom, she returned to her father, who attempted to arrange her marriage to the king of Ulster. Impressed by her devotion, the king intervened, removing her from parental control.

As documented in the Liber Hymnorum (11th century), the Curragh, a plain in County Kildare, was granted to St. Brigid by the king of Leinster. In Kildare, she established the first nunnery in Ireland. The community evolved into a double abbey, accommodating both monks and nuns, with the abbess holding a higher rank than the abbot. Following Brigid’s guidance, her friend St. Conleth became the bishop of their community. Legend has it that she actively participated in founding other nun communities.

The legend also resonates with the story of Dara, the blind nun, whose sight was restored through St. Brigid’s prayers. The symbolism of sight and spiritual insight adds a profound touch to Brigid’s narrative. Portuguese people hold Santa Luzia, a Saint, in high esteem, and also share this sentiment.

Saint Brigid’s Cross

The weaving of St. Brigid’s crosses out of rushes, reeds, or straws is a cherished tradition. These crosses, blessed with holy water and hung in homes, symbolize a warm welcome to St. Brigid and are believed to offer protection throughout the year.
