Every year, the Festas de Santo António liven the streets of Lisbon with colour, music, and the mouthwatering aroma of grilled sardines. One of the most cherished traditions is receiving a manjerico, a bush basil plant, with a poetic verse tucked into its leaves. This year, my verse was very charming, and I can’t wait to share it with you, along with a few other favourites from past celebrations. What’s Your Manjerico Verse This Year?
My Verse
I got it at Lidl (This is NOT a sponsored post) and this is how it goes:

“Este lindo manjerico,
no Lidl eu vou comprar.
Junto mais pão, e sardinhas
e todos vamos comemorar!”
Translation:
“This gorgeous/beautiful bush basil,
at Lidl I will buy,
I’ll add “plus” bread and sardines
and we’ll all celebrate!”

Other Verses

Translation: “St Anthony the matchmaker, With the bush basil on the altar, May love be true, And life smiling without ceasing.”

Translation: “Green and sweet-smelling bush basil, Bring luck to my love, Miraculous St Anthony, May this flower be eternal.”
